“And with every word spoken, we poked at the freedom that had once surrounded us so naturally and that we now so cruelly lacked. We hoped that it still existed somewhere and that there would still be a bit of freedom left for us when this was all over.”
Christoph Heubner speaks about ants, olives and a piece of margarine paper and about what was done to people “there” and how they continue to live “afterwards”. For more than four decades, Heubner accompanied survivors of Auschwitz and listened to them: When they talk about their happiness in life and their pain in life after “survival”, of images, smells and memories that they cannot forget throughout their lives and their certainty that they also have to speak for those who can no longer speak and who are as close to them as the number on their arm. Heubner’s volumes of stories »Ich sehen Hunde, die an der Leine reißen« and »Durch die Knochen bis ins Herz« have been published by Steidl Verlag in Göttingen. A third volume is in preparation.
The theme of his books is also reflected in the exhibition »Institute to Remember«, which Christoph Heubner conceived together with Michèle Déodat and which can currently be seen as part of the documenta partner exhibition »printing futures« at Kunsthaus Göttingen.
The »Trio to Remember« from Kassel (Natsuko Inada, piano – Detlef Landeck, trombone – Jens Dembowski, saxophone) will perform on the evening with Christoph Heubner and take up the themes of his stories musically in a touching manner.
Christoph Heubner, born in 1949, lives in Berlin as a writer and is the executive vice-president of the International Auschwitz Committee. He is also the co-founder of the International Youth Meeting Centre in Oswiecim/Auschwitz, and publishes prose and poems.
