On the occasion of his 88th birthday, the Kunsthaus Göttingen is dedicating a comprehensive show of works to the artist Jim Dine (*1935) from June 17 to September 17, 2023.

Over the past six decades, the U.S. painter, draftsman, and sculptor has created an extremely multifaceted, multimedia oeuvre. With “Jim Dine. Storm of Memory – Sculptures, Drawings, Prints, Books & Poetry”, the Kunsthaus presents for the first time in Germany a wide-ranging survey show that brings together not only sculptures, drawings and prints, but also numerous books by the artist. In addition, the exhibition provides insight into the artist’s lyrical work and shows a selection of Dine’s poems.
Among the works on display at the Kunsthaus will be recent sculptures and drawings that have never been shown before. Among the highlights will be the recent sculpture series “Elysian Fields”, which Jim Dine created in his studio at the Kunstgießerei in Sankt Gallen. His retrospective will also feature the new site-specific sculpture installation “Stardust” for a specially created space in the garden of the so-called “Oschmannhaus” at Düstere Strasse 26.

The selection of works focuses on Dine’s continuous exploration of existential personal as well as socio-political themes and testifies to the artist’s extremely vigilant observation of his present and critical poetic reflection of the human condition in his artistic works.
Jim Dine has been closely associated with the city of Göttingen for many years. Not only does Dine work many weeks a year in a studio in the immediate vicinity of the Kunsthaus, but he has also donated his expansive installation “Poet Singing (The Flowering Sheets)” to the city, which can be seen in the Kunsthaus courtyard in the “House of Words”. As part of the retrospective, this pavilion will be made more accessible. Dine has enjoyed a long-standing cooperation and friendship with the publisher Gerhard Steidl, who works in the neighborhood.
The exhibition at the Kunsthaus is the result of close collaboration between artist and publisher, curated by Gerhard Steidl.
